The Third Floor

The Third Floor

How they're boosting visibility and simplifying purchasing.

Overview

The Third Floor creates visual prototyping for films, television, games, and theme parks. The company uses Amazon Business to purchase specialty items it needs to deliver these services quickly and adapt to changing client requests. By taking advantage of Amazon Business, The Third Floor has boosted spend visibility and simplified purchasing across categories, including office supplies, company event décor, client gifts, and project-specific gear such as tripods and electronics cables.

Efficient purchasing brings applause from customers and employees

The Third Floor is named for its origin on the third floor of George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch. The seeds of the company were sown during preproduction planning work for Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. The digital visualizations of scenes were invaluable in creating the action and imagery of the film, and word soon spread. Today, The Third Floor creates visualizations for a majority of big-budget Hollywood movies, and also works on television, games, VR, and themed attractions. The company has adopted Amazon Business for a wide range of purchasing, including specialized equipment that helps it deliver animated visualizations of shots and scenes at a breakneck pace. Chris Edwards, CEO and Creative Director of The Third Floor, tells us the story.

Q: Why did you choose to use Amazon Business?

A: We’re the largest visualization company in motion pictures, video games, and theme parks. We work on over 75 percent of Hollywood blockbuster movies and lots of Academy Award winners, so you can imagine the demands on us. Things move at a very rapid pace. From tripods to cameras to scanners to little technology gizmos that we need from day to day, we purchase a wide range of items that are often very specialized, and we have to get them fast. Amazon Business has such a large selection that we can usually find what we’re looking for, and with two-day shipping, we know we’ll get it quickly. Amazon Business really understands the pace of our work and sometimes it almost feels like it can predict what we need.

“Amazon Business really brought visibility and security to our purchasing because we can control who has access to our business account. It’s easier to see who is purchasing and under which area, and the visibility is better for accounting overall.”

— Chris Edwards, CEO, The Third Floor

Q: How does using Amazon Business make running your business easier?

A: Before Amazon Business, people would buy things and we didn’t really have a way of tracking who bought what, which department they were in, what production the items were purchased for, and so on. It was a bit of a free-for-all. Amazon Business really brought visibility and security to our purchasing because we can control who has access to our business account. It’s easier to see who is purchasing and under which area, and the visibility is better for accounting overall.

Q: How does Amazon Business support your overall business strategy?

A: It’s important that we work with reliable partners that operate globally so we can receive supplies at the location where we are working. With Amazon Business, we know what we’re going to get and when, and that is key to giving clients the high-quality services we’re known for.
