For large organizations managing across teams, offices, and regions, sometimes the hardest purchasing to govern is the spend nobody saw coming. It's a problem serious enough that procurement leaders increasingly rank spend controls among their most valued tools.
In the lead-up to Amazon Business Reshape 2026, Spend Anomaly Monitoring is unveiling key updates to address these very concerns. First, real-time detection is available within seconds of purchases. The program has also expanded, with members on the Prime Business Medium plan now able to access the tool. Finally, a new anomaly type, luxury items, has been added to ensure more coverage across purchases.
“Policies are essential, but no set of rules can anticipate every purchase," said Nidheeshwar Balagangadharan, senior product manager. "Spend Anomaly Monitoring is the protective layer that covers your spend management system. It learns what your routine spend looks like for your organization and surfaces potential issues at a moment's notice. Bringing that same protection to more Prime Business members and making it real time are big steps toward purchase controls that scale with how organizations actually buy.”
Expansion to Prime Business Medium plan members
Previously only available to Prime Business members on the Enterprise plan, access to Spend Anomaly Monitoring is now available to Medium plan members too. Customers on smaller plans also manage distributed purchasing, and this protection is just as valuable for them. Medium plan members get the same core AI/ML-powered detection that Enterprise plan members already rely on, with 100% of business spend monitored for unusual trends and flagged for review.
Real-time detection
Detection now happens within milliseconds of a purchase. Customers can opt in to real-time unusual spend notifications on their dashboard to receive alerts as soon as those potential issues are detected, with a confirmation email to follow. Think of it like the fraud alert customers already get when the credit card company flags something unusual, now applied to business spend. The gap between an unusual purchase and administrator awareness closes dramatically. This gives leaders the chance to act while a purchase is still fresh, limiting the potential fallout from unwanted spend.
New anomaly types being monitored
Spend Anomaly Monitoring also added luxury item detection to its growing list of anomaly types. This surfaces premium or non-business items that may signal overspend, joining an existing list that the tool monitors, including abnormal repurchases, excessive daily spend, split purchases, unusual category purchases, and orders delivered to non-standard addresses.
These updates build on enhancements Amazon Business introduced earlier in 2026, including weekly digest emails, finance and group administrator access, and Amazon Business Assistant integration. Spend Anomaly Monitoring is evolving into a broader, faster, and more intelligent system, and it is exactly the kind of control larger organizations value.
In fact, Amazon Business recently commissioned the S&P Global 451 Research team to measure the return on investment for Prime Business members. Among the findings, the report found that larger organizations place greater value on exclusive features like Spend Anomaly Monitoring (52% of customers with over 1,000 employees cited), reflecting the stronger need to govern decentralized purchasing, identify exceptions, and maintain control at scale.
Prime Business-exclusive features are designed to complement one another. Spend Visibility helps customres understand their team’s raw data, including who is buying what, from where, and how much, with 24 months of data to analyze. The newly announced Insights Hub helps customers turn that data into savings opportunities. Guided Buying lets customers set policies based on those learnings, steering buyers toward preferred purchasing behaviors.
Spend Anomaly Monitoring is the safety net that covers it all. It gets to work before those policies are even in place, so teams can start purchasing from day one, while the system learns and surfaces increasingly intelligent alerts. It’s also the last line of defense once those policies are live, catching anything that breaks through before it becomes a real problem.
